Spire Appeal
Spire Appeal
We have launched a fund raising appeal to save one of Walmer's most recognisable landmarks, our church spire. Up to £100,000 is needed to repair it. Although the spire is safe at the moment, due to work required internally and externally repairs need to be made or the spire will have to be taken down. The spire is pointing upwards to the heavens as a reminder of the God who created all things both seen and unseen and is a constant visual witness to the Walmer area. You can see a picture of what the church will look like if the Spire has to come down. If you want to keep the spire as part of the Walmer landscape, we need your help. No amount to give is too small.
We have raised about £28,000 so far. There is still a long way to go.
The spire has surived several mini-earthquakes and the 1987 hurricane intact. Some damage did occur in the war as a German fighter pilot discharged surplus ammunition as he flew out over Walmer. The bullet holes can still be seen today. The main repairs are necessary however due to wear and tear and weather damage over a century. Various schemes to raise the money have been devised including a weekly quiz sheet that will soon be available in local quiz nights.
